I had an accident with my laptop...when I tried to update some packages in Kubuntu, I managed to uninstall the entire KDE desktop (and firefox, thunderbird and everything else).

But luckily I could still boot into the console environment and could run apt-get install kde and lo and behold I was able to rebuild my machine with a few downloads.

And the cool thing is that I didn't lose a single document, e-mail or bookmark.

I wonder what would have happened if I'd accidentally uninstalled the Windows desktop...

Agreed. I just sat up all night trying to bind a second IP address to a VPS server and found out that for some reason it's not supported and I have no clue how to set it up. But for the postmagnet server it was point and click via the control panel.

Linux is fun when you have a GUI that works.

99% of the time, there is no need to reinstall the operating system for similar reasons windows people do, unless you do something like my friend and instead of using fsck.reiserfs /dev/hda you do mkfs.reiserfs and remake your filesystem

I have Ubuntu system, like 800mhz or something like that, it's a P-3.

 I don't have it setup yet, I tend to favor my Laptop (dual core 3ghz P4 Desktop processor 800mhz frontside bus. To much power in one little box...) over my Desktop, and at current setting up my network sucks, I have gateway that pretends it's a router and a router that won't accept easily that it needs to be a switch...

 I tried the Ubuntu system out for a little while and liked what I saw, had allot more gadgets and gizmos that I know what to do with and should prove interesting to get used to once I have everything setup better.

 I am particularlly interested in doing Linux targetted, OpenGL and C++ (or some variation of the C language) game programming. Any hot tips for a conscientious objector of Windows who is looking to switch, once and for all, to a more sane Operating System?
